Volunteer with us!

Volunteers are very important in the lives of youth. At Home Base YK, we love hearing from people in the community who want to volunteer!

We are looking for volunteers in a variety of roles. Depending on your interests, skills, and commitment level, we likely have an opportunity for you. 

COOKING / kitchen volunteer

  • Plan and prepare nutritious meals for youth based on recipes provided by Home Base YK or based on personal recipes 

  • Include youth in cooking at either the Youth Centre kitchen or the Youth Dorms kitchen to teach cooking skills

  • Assist in creating grocery lists and meal preparation

  • Maintain a clean and safe kitchen environment

  • Ideally, meals are large enough for 10-15 youth

  • Commitment: at least 6 months, minimum 2 hours per week

YOUTH Centre Volunteer

  • Spend afternoons or evenings at the Youth Centre engaging with youth

  • Participate in planned activities and support staff in creating a safe and fun environment

  • ​Support staff to complete required duties (ex. Complete youth sign-in and sign-out, complete daily task list)

  • Be a positive role model for the youth

  • Commitment: at least 6 months, minimum 2 hours per week

workshop leader

  • Plan, advertise, and/or run classes or workshops for youth, hosted at the Youth Centre or at other community locations

  • Collaborate with Home Base YK staff to ensure workshops align with organizational goals

  • Share skills and knowledge to empower youth and provide them with opportunities to discover new interests

  • Commitment: can range from a one-time activity to longer term (ex. multi-year, ongoing volunteering weekly)

YOUTH program volunteer

  • Join the programs staff team to support youth during recreational and arts & culture programs

  • Participate in various activities such as soccer, basketball, swimming, day trips, pottery, gymnastics, sewing, beading, and more

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of youth during recreational events

  • Commitment: at least 6 months, minimum 2 hours per week

Repair and maintenance volunteer

  • Assist with repair and maintenance tasks at various youth housing program locations

  • Follow safety protocols and report any hazards or concerns to staff

  • Work collaboratively with other volunteers and staff to ensure the upkeep of facilities

  • Commitment: can range from a one-time activity to longer term (ex. multi-year, ongoing volunteering weekly)

employment and tutoring volunteer

  • Support youth in reaching education and employment goals 

  • Assist with resume building, practice interview skills, and help with homework

  • Foster a positive and encouraging atmosphere for youth to build self-confidence

  • Commitment: at least 6 months, minimum 2 hours per week

Home Base YK has partnered with the Foster Family Coalition to also run a Volunteer Mentorship Program for children and youth in our community. As a mentor, you will get matched with a child or youth and spend time one on one with them weekly or bi-weekly.
