Have you ever wondered how Home Base all became? Well now you can find out! All here on our Home Base History page, from where we started to where we are now. Its been a journey but a beautiful one, helping and growing year after year, being able to provide more for youth, with the help of volunteers, our amazing staff, and wonderful community.
Home Base Yellowknife (Formerly the SideDoor Ministries, est. 1995) is a non-profit organization providing housing, emergency, shelter, and support for vulnerable youth aged 12-24, Rebrand in May 2021, the organization focuses on "Housing First for Youth: principles operating a 52nd street youth shelter, dorms (formerly Hope's Haven), and now manages the city's Street Outreach program.

Founded in 1995 as SideDoor Ministries, the organization was created to support youth experiencing homelessness by providing a safe place, essential resources, and compassionate guidance. Since its beginning, it has worked to offer stability, build trust, and connect vulnerable young people with the support we need to move toward healthier and more secure futures.

Officially became Home Base Yellowknife in May 2021 following a request from youth and after meaningful consultation with members of the community.
This change reflected the voices, needs, and priorities shared by local young people and community partners, helping ensure that the space better represents and supports those it serves.
Rebrand

Operates a youth emergency shelter and a 10-room dormitory-style housing facility in downtown Yellowknife, providing safe and supportive accommodation for youth experiencing housing instability.
In 2021, the organization expanded its independent living options by acquiring an eight-unit housing complex to support youth transitioning toward greater independence.
Infrastructure

Provides housing along with comprehensive life-skills development programming. As of May 2025, the organization also manages the City’s Street Outreach Program, including a youth-focused outreach service known as “Line Drive.”
This program supports vulnerable individuals by creating a safe comforting option of transportation to prevent further/ additional trauma.
