GENDER BASED VIOLENCE

What is Gender Based Violence?
Gender-based violence (GBV) in Canada refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender, gender identity, or gender expression, and it includes domestic violence, sexual assault, harassment, stalking, forced marriage, and emotional or financial abuse. It disproportionately affects women, girls, Two-Spirit, transgender, and non-binary people, as well as marginalized groups such as Indigenous communities, newcomers, and people with disabilities. The effects of GBV are far-reaching: survivors may experience long-term physical injuries, chronic health problems, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, loss of income, homelessness, disrupted education, and social isolation, while families and communities suffer from cycles of trauma, instability, and reduced economic security. GBV also places a significant strain on social services, healthcare systems, and the justice system.

Taking Action
If you have experienced gender-based violence and are considering legal action, we will help you understand your options and navigate the justice system with you. You don't have to be involved in the justice system to access this support. We are here to walk you through the process, answer questions, and support you only if and when you decide to take that step.

What GBV Program Offers
The GBV Program offers trauma-informed counselling to help youth feel supported, understood, and safe. Weather in one-on-one sessions or group settings, counselling is a space to talk about your experience, build trust, and learn healthy ways to cope, all at your own pace.
This program uses a harm reduction approach, offering education about gender-based violence. This may include how to recognize the signs, set boundaries, understand your rights. This helps you stay informed and make choices that feel safe and right for you.
It also includes cultural programming that helps youth reconnect with their roots through healing circles led by Indigenous Elders or Cultural knowledge holders, traditional arts, and land-based activities. These experiences can strengthen your sense of identity, pride, and connection to community.
